SBU Monthly News - November 2023
Worldwide Women's Teams event on RealBridge 16 - 18 February, 2024.
This event is being run by the WBF Women’s Committee and the cost per team is only 40 euros.
Teams can have up to 8 members so there is no need to be able to play all weekend.
The aim of the event is to provide an opportunity to play international competitive bridge in a friendly environment without the usual limitations of cost or travel.

SBNews Bidding Panel Problems November 2023
Ayrshire District Swiss Pairs
Ayrshire District Swiss Pairs competition will take place on Saturday 9 December at 11am in the Ayrshire Bridge Centre in Prestwick. This is an open competition for all SBU members with National (Red) points on offer and prizes for the top Silver and Bronze pairs as well as the overall winners. There will be 48 Boards played (6 rounds of 8) with a break for lunch, which is not provided, and an estimated finish of around 6pm
The cost is £15 per person and this includes tea/coffee/biscuits throughout the day. Space is limited so booking ahead is essential. You can enter online here. I appreciate it might be a bit . . .

New book by Barnet Shenkin
Barnet Shenkin, one of Scotland's top players, has published a new book. It follows 'Playing with the Bridge Legends' which was published twenty years ago. The first section of the book shows the amazing influence Omar Sharif had on the game from when he started in the 1970's. It goes on to feature the World's best players including Belladonna , Garozzo, and some of their remarkable hands. Tales are told - tiny Iceland winning the World Championship against the bridge super powers in 1991 and Pakistan reaching the final in 1982.
The second section details the greatest Scandals in the game - Reese Schapiro . . .

Dear Members
Welcome to the new season. Although bridge is played all year round, the Scottish calendar traditionally “starts” in September. Lots has happened since I last wrote to you.
Mempad Upgrade
Mempad consists of a membership database and a Masterpoints system. A necessary major upgrade was done over the summer and has now been completed. This involved an enormous amount of work by Bill Whyte and his team, for which we are very grateful. There is a definite “new look” to the site and feedback so far has been positive.

Dear Members
Hopefully, members have been enjoying the warm spell of weather when not playing bridge. I know that some clubs will have closed for the summer, but many are now back playing in the clubs throughout the year. As usual, it has been very busy behind the scenes.
Annual General Meeting
The AGM on 23rd May was attended by 68 members and we received a record number of 129 proxy votes. There were lots of questions and discussion, and the minutes of the meeting can be found on the website.

Mixed Swiss Winners
The first SBU National Tournament held fully face to face was held at the weekend at the New Melville in Edinburgh.
The pairs winners shown receiving the Ruby Martyn Trophy were Liz McGowan and Tim McKay.
The winners of the teams were Ian Sime, Fiona McQuaker, Anne Symons and Brian Short with SBU Chair Alan Goodman.
