AlanGoodmanAlan Goodman

Alan Goodman is a retired actuary who has a background of management and consultancy within the financial services industry. Most recently he has chaired the Boards of a Scottish charity and his local golf club. 

He has played bridge for many years, was heavily involved in setting up New Melville Bridge Club and has represented Scotland at various international events over a number of years.  

Alan sits on the SBU Investigation Panel and is chair of the new SBU Board of Trustees.

Medical Fellow with an MBA in Public Policy and Master of Public Health Medicine.

Previously Tayside Regional Council’s Head of Quality Assurance.  

Whilst Tayside Health Board’s Medical Advisor from 1997 to 2009, seconded to various Government bodies and quangos in England, Scotland and Wales, tasked with Health Services Governance.

Sat on and chaired a number of Charitable and/or not for profit Organisations and bodies, taking one successfully through the Charitable route.

President of SBU from 2020 to date, hold local and district office.

Sarah is a qualified chartered accountant with 30 years experience working in the third sector. She has had various voluntary roles with not for profit organisations including Chair of Trustees for a charity supporting families with young children in Edinburgh.

She is a keen bridge player and supports initiatives to encourage new players. She was part of the team setting up and running the SBU Summer Academy in 2021 and assists with classes at the New Melville Bridge Club in Edinburgh.

Ian is a Maths graduate who spent his career in Further and Higher Education retiring from the University of the West of Scotland where he was Director of College Partnerships

He has played Bridge for over 40 years and is still playing regularly with his original partner.

He has been involved in Governance in the Further Education sector for over 10 years and since 2018 has been Chair of the Board of Management of Glasgow Kelvin College. Ian firmly believes that effective governance underpins successful organisations and looks forward to contributing to the work of the Board of SBU

NeilArchibaldNeil Archibald

Neil took up bridge shortly before his early retirement in 2018 and confesses to being obsessed! Still learning the game, Neil divides his time between Edinburgh and South Africa and plays whever the opportunity presents itself.  Neil has worked in senior finance and HR roles during his career having professional qualifications in both disciplines as well as having studied and worked in the journalism field for a period.  Neil  currently provides support to the SBU in areas such as HR and communications.

mike hodderMike Hodder

Mike is a retired technical manager having worked in the oil industry for over 40 years. In a varied career, he held management positions in research, technical services, QHSE, training and marketing and worked in the UK, France and the USA. He learnt to play bridge at school and has been a keen player ever since.  

He is currently President of SBU North District and has also taught beginners and improvers at Aberdeen Bridge Club. He is keen to promote bridge at all levels including social bridge.

Gavin works in Financial Services as an internal auditor. He has returned to the bridge world after learning whilst at school, being in the successful Peggy Bayer squad in 1995 and leading the Edinburgh University team to runners-up in the 1997 Portland Bowl. He is a member of Longniddry Bridge Club and also plays regularly in Dunbar.
