Tournament Director Training
The Tournament Director is at the heart of every game of bridge. He/she has to fulfil a large number of roles in the course of a tournament: – setting up the room, identifying the movement, locating duplicated boards, keeping the event running to time, calling the moves and where necessary explaining the Laws when something untoward happens at the table. At the end, everything has to be packed away and the event scored. It is absolutely vital, therefore, that if players are to enjoy their game to the full the Tournament Directors should have a good knowledge of all of these elements. A healthy sprinkling of common sense, a large pinch of good humour and an appreciation of human frailties are also much needed in a good Director. As part of its development programme for Tournament Directors the SBU now provides training at four different levels.
Basic Club Directing
This is a single session introduction to tournament directing which is available in two formats. The first is aimed at players who are just starting, or who are about to start, directing at their clubs and who would like some help in doing so. The informal evening concentrates on the setting up of the tournament; goes on to a discussion of basic Movements (Aggregate, Howell, Teams) and concludes with a look at the most common Law infringements (viz. Revoke, Faced Opening Lead out of Turn, Mechanical Errors and Insufficient Bids).
The second is for those who already have a good grounding in movement and would benefit from an introduction to the Laws of Duplicate Bridge. It provides a tour of the Laws then takes an in-depth look at the infringements mentioned above. These sessions can be arranged for one club or for a group of clubs who wish to get together. We can deal with any numbers, but since the total cost is roughly £50 it is better to have a dozen or so.
Club Director’s Course
This is a course aimed at people who have a fair amount of directing experience and who would like to consolidate this and take it further. The elements of the Basic Club Directing Course are reinforced and the Laws element is greatly extended. Particular emphasis is placed on the Revoke Laws and on simulations of common rulings and how they should be given. Courses will be arranged as demand dictates, so keep an eye on the SBU website. Course fees are around £15 per head.
District Director’s Course
A weekend course aimed at those who have passed the Club course and want to go further. The main thrust of the District Course is the use of Computer scoring, along with slots on more advanced movements, variations in scoring and organising multiple section tournaments. We also look at Claims and Concessions and some of the other, less well-known Laws. Open to all who have passed the Club course or who are experienced Directors nominated by their Districts. Course fees are around £25 per head.
Advanced Director’s Course
The central theme of this course is the judgement decisions required in cases of potential damage resulting from such things as either hesitation in bidding or play or in the Misinformation situation. We will also look at the Appeals Committee and the organisation of large events. Participants for this course are usually by invitation or nomination by District committees. Course fees are around £40 per head.
