The SBU Southern District organised a very successful ‘Meet and Play’ bridge event at the Holiday Inn in Dumfries, running from 12th – 14th April. Over 70 people from all over the country from Aberdeen to London took part in 4 events over the weekend and it turned into a very sociable and enjoyable event for everyone.

After dinner on Friday evening, Horst and Grace, our Tournament director and assistant, organised the Pairs event with 30 pairs taking part. It was a very smoothly run event and the winning pair were Eva Adamson and Sheila Robertson from Loreburn Bridge Club in Dumfries.

After a free Saturday morning, there was a teams’ event in the afternoon, with 18 teams taking part. Again, this went well, and the eventual winners were the Gatehouse team of Anne Athol, Liz MacPherson, Liz Dodds and Tina Peowrie.

After dinner on the Saturday, we had an interesting bridge talk given by Alex Adamson, a very experienced player who has represented Scotland at major European and World Bridge events. Alex focussed mainly on how to be a good bridge partner and improve our approach to the game.

To finish off the weekend, we played a Swiss pairs event on Sunday morning. There were 28 pairs taking part and the winning pair were Jess Mason and Fiona McCormack from Central Scotland.

At the end of the morning’s bridge, the winners of each event were presented with their trophies and prizes. Jackie Gattey and David Wallace were presented with the Robertson Trophy for being the most improved players in the Southern District Bridge Class.

The Convenors of the weekend, Ros Thomson and Liz Chambers were delighted at the attendance at this ‘Meet and Play’ event and were even more delighted to see how well the beginners integrated with the more experienced players to create a very friendly and supportive atmosphere.
