Having considered the updated “COVID-19 Information and Guidance for Non-Healthcare settings” from Health Protection Scotland, taking account of our Duty of Care to and the vulnerable demography of our bridge playing population, at a specially convened online meeting today, 16th March, the SBU Council decided to cancel ALL future events until further notice.

This includes the Kennedy bronze Sims but not the Hugh Kelsey, as some clubs have already played their heat or are playing tonight.

If possible, we will try to reschedule some events before the new season starts in September.

We are in consultation with Bridge Overseas regarding the Overseas Congress in May.

The SBU Congress planned for Stirling in July is cancelled.

Advice to Districts, Clubs, and Members, and following today's Government briefing:

District events:- we strongly recommend cancellation.

Clubs:- we strongly advise closure pro-tem.

Members should themselves follow Scottish Government/Health Protection Scotland advice.

Council is acutely conscious that, for the Women’s WE in particular, this unheralded measure, will present difficulties to attendees, organisers, directors, scorers, hospitality, venues, and hotel outlets alike.

As indicated in our original post, we have been constantly reviewing all possible Information sites. And, like all similar organisations and responsible bodies, we have been weighing up risks, and our daily position, against the available Information including the stated position of companion NBOs.

We hope that these measures will best help protect our members and those who carry a responsibility for their welfare.

We are exploring the possibility of helping Districts, clubs, and, perhaps, ourselves, to run private Tournaments on online platforms (BBO).

President, Scottish Bridge Union
