Central District

Alan is a retired teacher of German and French. He grew up in Banff where sports, games and cards played an important part in his upbringing and development.

When he joined the staff of Carnoustie High School in 1981 he quicky gravitated towards the lunchtime bridge table in the staffroom and it did not take long for him to become hooked on our wonderful game.

He has been secretary of Arbroath Bridge Club since 2000 and reluctantly took over the chairmanship of Central District in 2016. His aim is to ensure that competitions run smoothly and he hopes that all players leave a club or district event having had a positive and enjoyable experience.

East District

I have been on the East District Committee for about 20 years and acted as Secretary for about 12 of these and then took over as Chair 3 years ago in order to allow Liz McGowan to step down.  Unfortunately I only had about 8 months before we went into Lockdown so have not had the opportunity to visit clubs in the District as I was busy with Melville tournaments and SBU events.  When playing face to face, we had a regular schedule of tournaments over the course of the year as well as 5 Divisions in the East District League which ran from September to April.  Going forward the challenge will be to get the League up and running again.  It may be that it will have to be a mixture of F2F and online and whether we get back to 5 Divisions remains to be seen.

Mike Hodder

North District

Mike took over as President of SBU North District (Aberdeen City and Shire + Shetland) in Jan 2022. Although a regular tournament player himself, he is keen to promote bridge at all levels including social bridge, which forms the bedrock of the game especially amongst the retired community.

Currently he partners Graham Johnson in the on-line league, but also plays with his wife Margaret and with Sandra Rabbitts. Mike is now retired; when not at the card table, he plays golf, walks dogs and reads. He also confesses to a mild addiction to Killer Soduku and crosswords.

Mike welcomes all discussions and feedback, so if you have any ideas on how we can improve bridge in the North East, please get in touch.
